<description>Space Planning &#124; Interior Design + Specification &#124; Custom Furnishings Design + Fabrication &#124; Custom Lighting Design + Fabrication

Fix Studio was selected via winning proposal for the reevaluation and design of Genoa, a restaurant established in 1971. Fix Studio’s new space plan for the interior allows Genoa to embrace its patrons and maintains the storefront view of the gallery kitchen, new lobby, and a glimpse of what is inside the building. They were tasked with respecting the historic building and brand equity while bringing the restaurant up to date. A sister bar/restaurant next door, Accanto, was created out of a storefront area that was previously storage.

A fireplace, custom chandeliers, new ADA restrooms, and a redesign of the private dining room were all included in our concept and execution. A neighborhood bar/café, Accanto, located at the back of the building, shares a prep kitchen, dish pit, and cooler area with Genoa. It also shares the historic storefront, but with a much more open view to the street. The bar and compact kitchen are exposed to the rest of the space and provide a lively backdrop to the dining and rear lounge areas.

The original building required seismic upgrades, which allowed Fix Studio to reconfigure and customize the space in accordance with the parameters set out by the client. The interior, unlike anything experienced by past Genoa customers, is elegant and cozy with hints of gold and blue, banquettes and linen covered tables fill the space while cascades of honey-colored glass lit from within give the restaurant warmth.

<description>Interior Design + Specification &#124; Color Design &#124; Kitchen &#38; Bath Design &#124; Historic Restoration &#124; Research &#124; Project Management

A project of passion, Fix Studio thoughtfully renovated an historic 1898 Victorian home to the frame. The home was slated for demolition by the city and survived a fire before it was saved from the wrecking ball. Original moldings were numbered, removed and reinstalled upon completion. Wainscot was reused by turning the unpainted side outward and exposing beautiful wavy grain. The home is insulated throughout with updated mechanicals including: electrical, plumbing, duct work, a high efficiency furnace and water heater. Nearly all appliances, plumbing fixtures, lighting, and much of the supplemental woodwork are reclaimed. New wood clad fiberglass windows replaced the original 6’ tall double hung windows. Low VOC paints were used in each room.

“Viking rave meets culinary cabin,” was the lively theme extracted by fix studio partners Jennifer Jako and Chris Bleiler for the redesign of a 1974 private residence based on client direction. fix studio worked in tandem with Bend Trend Homes, construction contractor.

The once claustrophobic kitchen was thrown open with addition of a header and installation of a Carrara marble island. The cabinets were locally crafted with FSC certified alder plywood topped with durable concrete countertops.

Mirrors throughout the space give dimension and light to the walls of a once cramped hallway as a cluster of convex mirrors become a focal point for the area. An element of fun for the clients’ three children hangs in the disco ball secured in the great room. The brick fireplace has been updated with a concrete skim coat and completed with a custom steel fireplace screen and mantel allowing crisp lines to emerge.

A ship’s ladder was chosen to lead in to the “control room,” a home office, formerly an attic storage space, which overlooks the great room. Skylights, where there was once a foreboding ceiling, allow light to pour into the space and also provide magnificent views of Ponderosa pines and starry skies.

Metal drain grates salvaged from a building floor became table legs and a code-conforming handrail to the upper floor. Photographs, referencing the region liven up the walls and join a hand painted retro sign secured over the stairs. Two wing chairs were given a new life, reupholstered in coffee bags with ottomans made of jute webbing, and join a comfy sofa with coffee tables made of cedar log rounds.

New doors were hung throughout the space replacing hollow doors along with a custom front door by fix studio inspired by the home’s era and existing oak floors. All hardware was updated throughout the home.

All deconstructed items/finishes were reused or taken to the Habitat for Humanity ReStore.

This 3800 sq ft. 150 seat restaurant was completed in Dec. 2008 and included logo and branding development as well as space design.

Materials and brand story reflect the natural landscape, history, and resources of the region. Custom light fixtures were created to accentuate the theme using everyday objects in unusual ways: a chandelier made from flatware coupled with chandeliers that utilize fishing lure spinners in place of traditional crystals.

Previously submerged lumber was used as tabling and as the basis for a theatrical wall, providing division of the space as well as visual interest. Locally crafted stained glass inserts in the wall provide beauty and privacy for diners within. A massive 16 ft. solid slab of Douglas Fir acts as the focal point for the bar, seating a total eighteen patrons.

A glass art wall dividing the dining room from the bar was created using depression glass plates, their jewel tones give richness in contrast to the wood used.

Their clients requested a modern, comfortable, European style café. fix studio created a space that charms in both daylight and evening; by day Morso is an urban café offering light meals and gelato, by evening it is a sophisticated space with small bites (“morso”) and various wines.

A hand drawn mural of Florence, Italy by Tyler Polich tops the service area. Polich's drawing was enlarged and applied as wallpaper. Wine is displayed on the counter and behind the point of sale and storage with warm LED lighting.

Curved seats, warm paneling and rich tables were hand crafted from locally sourced hickory wood. Elegant bent wood arm chairs with custom cushions add curves to an otherwise linear grouping.

The space is defined by a dark rich blue saturated ceiling that is hung with festoons of round lights. Custom steel cantilevered lights are suspended above banquette seating below large mirrors. The mirrors give the illusion of doubling the size of the room and reflect the mural and lighting opposite.

<description>Interior Design + Specification &#124; Custom Furniture &#38; Fixture Design + Fabrication &#124; Art Installation &#124; Custom Lighting Design

Working with the challenge of a small space, Fix Studio created a warm and sophisticated venue by appropriating earth tone colors, wool textiles, and rich woods. Tabletops of opulent walnut paired with custom wool upholstered banquette seating welcome patrons into the cozy interior. Ceramic tiles and antiqued mirrors shimmer and bounce the light emitted from classic Edison bulbs throughout, leading the eye to the open kitchen, further expanding the intimate space.

With the client’s request to create a space that appeared worn-in and timeless, café chairs were handmade, ebonized, and then distressed. Fix Studio retrofitted an old warehouse dolly for use as a bar cart and wall art using some of the client’s branding took the form of antique pull-down maps. The fabrics are a subtle plaid, reminiscent of burlap, and a plum fabric made of recycled water bottles appears as shrunken wool.

A giant customized pot rack was designed and fabricated out of steel. Fully adorned, it creates a focal point in the room. Below is a large Oregon walnut table providing a surface for preparation and plating of food. A custom turned wood convex mirror reflects the bare wire wall sconces.

Thatcher’s was planned as a public living room in which to enjoy a beverage, complete work, or relax and have fun. Local craftsmanship and community were also driving design themes.

Crisp white counters, and ceiling and light fixtures provide a bright, modern contrast to knotty alder, walnut wood cladding, wooden chairs, and hand stitched wall quilts combine to successfully create a warm urban-rustic aesthetic in this large coffee shop.

Dining height tabletops are walnut. Bar height zinc and ceasarstone tables provide varied height seating options. The bent plywood seats contrast beautifully with walnut and linen look vinyl banquette seating. Occasional chairs, appropriately upholstered in coffee bags urge guests to linger.

Vintage percolators were perforated and cast a light pattern on the wall. These percolators also inspired Fix Studio to produce inimitable white porcelain fixtures secured above.

A children’s area includes bench storage for toys and petite bent plywood table and stools imitate the seating in the coffee shop. Local grade school students provided Fix Studio drawings of their town, which were in turn printed on fabric and incorporated into a community quilt.

<description>Interior Design + Specification &#124; Custom Furniture, Fixture, Lighting Design + Fabrication

Striving to create an exhibition style bakery in the heart of downtown Portland, Fix Studio worked hand in hand with Lovejoy Bakers. The previous tenant had built a wall inside the space, obstructing the natural light available. Utilizing the existing space to its full potential, the floor to ceiling windows that wrap around the space were revealed and left exposed. Custom glass boxes-stacked akimbo-create a delicious display of pastries. Clean lines are carried into the wine display, custom oak tables, bench seating, and textured accent wall of varying board widths. A unique bakery-inspired marble table has become a favorite lunch spot for regulars and newcomers alike.

Beautiful hand thrown porcelain light fixtures, exclusively designed by Fix Studio hang above the nested oak tables and are akin to rolled dough and mixing bowls found in every baker’s kitchen. A large chalkboard wall hosts a rotating display of quotes and artist installations. The handmade cedar stools nested along the tables lining the perimeter provide comfortable seating and a view of customers walking past distinctive planter boxes and a custom bike rack. Unfolding in powder-coated steel outside the bakery, the mindfully selected shade of yellow on the rack matches the exploded Lovejoy Bakers logo bursting from behind the counter.
